Translating Discoveries into Sustainable Real-World Solutions
Research should not stay in the lab. We aim to turn our work on sensing and modeling the body's signals, from the heart to breathing and swallowing, into low-cost, sustainable solutions that improve health around the world. Working with international communities, healthcare providers, and global organizations helps us design technologies that meet real-world needs and close gaps in health equity.
During the 2025–26 academic year, Amirtahà served as Lehigh University's representative to the United Nations, with a focus on connecting our research to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our joint oral statement with the Australian NGO Caring and Living As Neighbours was accepted for the 2026 UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). The statement highlighted the importance of newborn screening worldwide and the need for accessible methods to screen for critical congenital heart disease in underserved areas.
In July 2026, our research group spent two weeks on fieldwork in the Philippines. As part of the Creative Inquiry program at Lehigh University, the trip focused on designing a mobile health (mHealth) pipeline for monitoring cardiovascular activity in resource-limited settings. To understand local needs and technology gaps, we met with a wide range of users and stakeholders: local clinicians, officials from the Department of Health, Barangay (local community) offices, patients, and the general public. These conversations continue to inform our user-centered design, so that our solutions fit the people and settings they are meant for.
Amirtahà was named a 2026 Global Teaching and Learning Fellow. The fellowship supports bringing global perspectives into engineering education and research, preparing students to design solutions with worldwide impact.
