Language politics in Taiwan

Kerim Friedman has put his anthropology dissertation online. 70% of the Taiwanese speak languages other than Mandarin, especially Hoklo and Hakka. But Mandarin is nevertheless the official, 'hegemonic' language of Taiwan -- the majority languages are, for various political and cultural reasons, declining.

Looks like great work!
