Groups and Schedule

  • A total of 40 students will be divided in two sessions with 20 students.
  • The 7-week sessions will be separated by the Spring Break (March 11-15):
    • Session 1: 1/22 – 3/8
    • Session 2: 3/18 – 5/3
  • Each session will have 1 lecture (first week) and 2 3-week blocks:
    • Lecture S1: 1/22 – 1/26
    • Block 1: 1/29 – 2/16
    • Block 2: 2/19 – 3/8
    • Lecture S2: 3/18 – 3/22
    • Block 3: 3/25 – 4/12
    • Block 4: 4/15 – 5/3
  • The 20 students will be divided in 6 groups of 3 and 1 group of 2.
  • There will be 7 experiments running in the IACL each Tuesday/Thursday.
  • Each student will work in two experiments:
    • Block 1 & Block 3: MEM05 – Qube DC-motor Position/Velocity Control
    • Block 2 & Block 4: MEM06 – Qube Inverted-pendulum Position Control
  • Each experiment requires 4 consecutive meetings in the laboratory.
  • The last week of each block will be dedicated to reporting and interviewing.
  • Students must come to the lab well prepared:
    • Experimental guidelines must be read in advance
  • The time between laboratory meetings must be used to perform:
    • Calculations and derivations
    • Control design
    • Simulations
    • Report writing
  • Experiments will be run in groups, reports and interviews will be individual.
  • Reports are due by noon on Monday of the Reporting/Interviewing week:
    • Block 1: Report due on Monday, February 12, 12 PM
    • Block 2: Report due on Monday, March 4, 12 PM
    • Block 3: Report due on Monday, April 8, 12 PM
    • Block 4: Report due on Monday, April 29, 12 PM
  • Digital versions (pdf files) of the reports will be submitted by e-mail.
  • Half of the class will be interviewed on Tuesday and half on Thursday.
  • The interview order will be switched between the first and second block.
  • Interviews will take place in Prof. Schuster's office (ME 454).
  • Lectures will be in ME 450 during the first week of each session.
  • Students will go to the IACL (ME 564) after the first week of each session.
