Main file, Stata contains all the main variables concerning democracy, variously defined, through 2003 as described in SCID, 2006.

Analysis file 1, Stata .xls contains additional variables needed to replicate the SCID analysis.

Analysis file 2, Stata contains the data needed for the SCID analyses of the "Maddison years" (Be careful: this file is not as well documented as the others, it is organized in a "wide" rather than "long" format, and the nation codes are not consistent with the other files.)

Original data sources and processing. Please register here if you have not already done so.

Our main source of voter turnout data is the website of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.

For the latest years, we updated IDEA election data from other sources.

Election data was transformed into a yearly form via Java and Access, using UN population data.

Turnout data pre-1945 was obtained from Vanhanen and adapted.

Suffrage data was adapted from Paxton and Bollen.

Our main source for democracy/autocracy data was the Polity Project as transformed.

The data was assembled principally with Stata do files: main democracy build (1) and secondary data build (2).

The analysis was conducted with a Stata do file: analysis file .

Questions about the data or documentation should be directed to Bruce Moon .
