The suffrage data was obtained from
Paxton, Pamela, Kenneth A. Bollen, Deborah M Lee and HyoJoung Kim (2003) “Research Forum - A Half-Century of Suffrage: New Data and a Comparative Analysis,” Studies in comparative international development. 38, 1: 93.
Specifically, we obtained the data directly from the website of Kenneth A. Bollen. We downloaded the original Excel file from there. In Excel and Access, we modified the format to better fit our needs. That included changing the column headers to actual years, linking the data to Polity country codes and converting it into a format with one row per country per year. We also changed the "." used in the Excel file for not existing data (e.g. because a country didn't exist) into a -7.
We assigned Polity codes to the data. The following represents a list of special cases:
