PHY 120(+121) & 122(+123): Physics of Medical Imaging

Fall Semester/Spring Semester

[Image: the Physics of Medical Imaging Class of Spring 2017]

The Physics of Medical Imaging Class of Spring 2017.

Physics 120+121 and 122+123 are designed to be the next classes in a sequence that starts with PHY 10 and PHY 13 (General Physics I and II), with PHY 13 or PHY 21 as a prerequisite.

The two classes can be taken independently from each other, and in any sequence. It is not necessary to take PHY 120 before taking PHY 122 because each one of the two classes focuses on different imaging principles and techniques.

PHY 120/122 emphasize ideas and concepts of modern physics that are the foundation of several medical imaging techniques like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and CT-scans. As a follow up to standard introductory physics classes, these courses will introduce and explain more advanced modern physics topics like nuclear physics and quantum physics, and are therefore well suited for any student interested in physics, in addition to premed students or prospective graduate students in the biological sciences.

After learning about some of the physical principles behind the most important imaging techniques, the PHY 120/122 courses address how diagnostic data are collected and analyzed to create the image a physician will eventually interpret for clinical purposes. Since some techniques more than others have to take into account their impact on a patient — like, for example, the amount of radiation absorbed during imaging using X-rays or radionuclides — the course also offers an introduction in dosimetry.

PHY 120/122 are offered as 2 or 3 credits classes in the fall and in the spring semesters. 3 credit students sign up for the two-credit version of the course, and take the 1-credit supplement together with it. 3 credit students take two 50 minutes classes each week together with the 2 credits students, and in addition meet regularly with the instructor to work on a special topic that is presented at the end of the semester.

PHY 120+121

An introduction and analysis of the physical principles and effects that underlay medical imaging techniques such as those using ultrasound, x-rays or other high-energy radiation. The course will serve as an introduction to intermediate quantum physics and electromagnetism concepts and discuss the effects and data collection techniques that ultimately allow to create an image that a physician can interpret for clinical purposes.

PHY 120 is 2 credits. PHY 121 can be taken as a 1-credit supplement for a total of 3 credits.

Course Prerequisites: PHY 21 or PHY 13

PHY 122+123

An introduction and analysis of the physical principles and effects that underlay medical imaging techniques based on nuclear magnetic resonance, such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). The course will serve as an introduction to intermediate/advanced quantum physics and electromagnetism concepts and discuss the effects and data collection techniques that ultimately allow to create an image that a physician can interpret for clinical purposes. It is not necessary to take PHY 120 before taking PHY 122.

PHY 122 is 2 credits. PHY 123 can be taken as a 1-credit supplement for a total of 3 credits.

Course Prerequisites: PHY 21 or PHY 13
