Graduate

A doctorate (PhD) usually requires four to five years to obtain.  The early years include graduate level course work, but research work leading to the PhD dissertation continues throughout.  A doctorate is the basis for careers in research and teaching.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers masters degrees in Materials Science, Photonics, and Polymer Science and Engineering.  These masters degrees are typically completed within two years and are of two types, the Masters of Science (MS) and the Masters of Engineering (ME).  The MS degree consists of 30 credit hours of coursework and usually requires research work and a thesis.  The ME degree consists of courses work plus and engineering project report.  Masters degrees provide the advanced coursework and training that are often an entry to higher level jobs.

The Department works with the Center for Polymer Science and Engineering to provide PhD and masters degree in Polymer Science and Engineering.

Lehigh’s interdisciplinary program in Business Administration and Engineering (MBA&E) meets the diverse but converging needs of business and engineering by offering students the chance to acquire a solid foundation in both fields.

The Certificate in Nanotechnology requires 12 credits of course work. It is very suitable for part time study. This certificate aims to provide an opportunity for mature workers to "retrain" in this new field, though it is also suitable for recent graduates.

Admissions requirements for graduate study depend on the program. Please check individual program webpages for the requirements.

Doctoral students are generally fully supported through the award of Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships. Masters students, those in the Certificate in Nanotechnology program, and those taking graduate study not leading to a degree are in most cases responsible for their own finances.
