- Introduction
- Syllabus
- Name Reaction List- How to best approach these
- Problem Sets- How these work
- Model Sets- not necessary but really will help a lot. Framework molecular model kits or Orbit sets will do.
Nomenclature:
Enantiomers: Stereoisomers which are not superimposable upon their mirror images.arg
Diastereomers: Stereoisomers which are not related by mirror images.
Switch one center to generate a diastereomer. If n = # of chiral centers, then there are 2n/2 sets of diastereomers.
Meso Compounds: These molecules have chiral centers however, they
also contain a plane of symmetry and therefore do not rotate polarized
light. These are achiral molecules.
Designation of face on a molecule:
Types of Reactions:
1)Stereospecific Reactions: stereoisomerically different starting materials give stereoisomerically different products under the same reaction conditions.
2)Stereoselective Reactions: A reaction in which a single reactant could generate two or more stereoisomeric products but one is formed preferentially.
3)Regioselective Reaction: A reaction in which a single reactant could generate two or more positional isomers but one is formed preferentially.
Syn and Anti Designations:
Syn - Bonds are made and broken on the same face of a plane of a double bond.
Anti - Bonds are made and broken on opposite sides of a plane of a double bond.
