"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance"
    (20 U.S.C. Section 1681).

As the American people witnessed the close of a decade scarred by violent social revolution, the 1970s opened with progressive strides in women's rights. The 1960s had been filled with an unprecedented amount of brutality and the years that followed were marked with notable legislative achievements. Women found a way to continue the fight for equality and advanced their own rights using the powerful tool of legislation. Securing the nation's attention with the decision of Roe v. Wade (1973), the women's movement was fully ignited. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was a highly influential piece of legislation that has shaped today's generation. Tackling sex-biased education was one of the first steps that truly changed the paths women have taken in the last 27 years. New doors have been opened as a direct result of Title IX and now women enjoy more opportunities than previous generations. More specifically Title IX addressed the controversial subject of gender equity in athletics, which sought to unlock an entirely new door in women's recreation.
