Recruiting can feel like a full-time job on top of classes, clubs, and everything else going on during the semester. Between tracking deadlines, tailoring resumes, and figuring out how to network effectively, it's easy to feel behind before you even start. Over time, students have shared a few tools that genuinely make the recruiting process more manageable, especially for underclassmen. Two platforms that consistently come up are RecruitU and Career Duck. While they serve different purposes, both are designed to reduce friction in key parts of the recruiting process.
RecruitU: Staying Organized During Recruiting
RecruitU is a finance and consulting recruitment platform founded by former investment bankers. Students can create an account and access nearly all of its features at no cost.
Application Tracking
One of the biggest challenges in recruiting is keeping track of applications across dozens of company websites. RecruitU centralizes this process by allowing students to filter applications by class year, industry, role, city, and company. It also includes a tracking system where students can mark when an application has been completed, helping prevent missed deadlines and duplicated effort.
Networking
RecruitU also offers a more targeted networking experience compared to platforms like Handshake. Students can filter by school and position, and the profiles are focused on finance and consulting roles. Many profiles include work emails, which are often difficult to find elsewhere, making outreach more efficient and intentional.
Interview Prep
The platform includes an interview practice feature with a question bank based on real interviews. Students can record responses and review example answers. While helpful as a starting point, many students find this feature less essential compared to RecruitU's tracking and networking tools, as similar interview prep resources exist elsewhere.
Note on Premium
RecruitU does offer premium features, but roughly 95% of the platform is accessible through the free version. Premium access is typically available through partnerships or referrals, though the basic version is sufficient for most students. Overall, RecruitU is most commonly recommended as an application-tracking tool, particularly for first- and second-year students navigating recruiting timelines for the first time.
Career Duck: Simplifying Resume Tailoring
Career Duck is a resume-building and tailoring tool designed to help students customize their resumes for specific roles and companies. Instead of guessing what employers want, the platform works directly off job postings.
Students can paste a job posting URL or job description into the platform, which allows Career Duck to provide targeted guidance in two main ways:
ATS Keyword Identification
Many employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen resumes based on keywords. Career Duck identifies relevant keywords from the job description so students know what skills and language employers are likely prioritizing.
Resume Tailoring
Even when applying for similar roles, firms often value different skills and experiences. Career Duck provides example resume bullet points aligned with each posting, making it easier to adjust wording and emphasize what matters most to each employer. Career Duck is often recommended to first-year students in particular, as it helps break down the resume-building process into something more structured and less overwhelming.
Final Thoughts
Recruiting will always require effort, but the right tools can make it far more manageable. RecruitU helps students stay organized and on top of deadlines, while Career Duck simplifies the process of tailoring resumes to different roles and firms. Together, they address two of the most stressful parts of recruiting and can be especially helpful early on.
