Subject: A sorrow from Vietnam From: "Nguyen H. V. Hung" Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2004 10:58:37 -0400 (EDT) I regret to inform that Pham Anh Minh suddenly passed away on October 23, 2004 after a massive stroke. Normally, he had been a strong man. I received a phone call from Hue on this unbelievable news around 30 minutes after it happened. Actually, I needed 2-3 hours to really understand what the phone call meant. Minh was born on April 23, 1960 and grew up in Hue. The funeral will take place on October 28, 2004. Minh received his Ph. D. degree in 1990 in the University of Hanoi (the former name of the Vietnam National University) under the guidance of Huynh Mui, who had also been my thesis supervisor. Since then, Minh worked in the Department of Mathematics, University of Hue, where he was promoted to associate professor in 2002. Minh had been very hard working. His main interest was the cohomology of finite groups. In the last few years, he worked on the nilpotency of the Essential Cohomology of finite groups. He had many coauthors and I am happy to have been one of them. His visitors and coauthors enjoyed his open-minded friendship. In August, several colleagues met him and listened to his talk in the International Conference in Algebraic Topology in honor of Huynh Mui, Hanoi 2004. Minh's death is a heavy loss of the Vienam Topology School and of the Vietnam Mathematical Community in general. Minh left his wife, Phuong, and a son of 16-year age. Yours, Nguyen H. V. Hung
