Please notice that this is different from our usual time of meeting. The speaker is Ioan James 'The Mind of the Mathematician' An introduction to the literature on the psychology of mathematicians, and other scientists. For example, highly intelligent people with mild forms of autism often love mathematics and tend to excel at it. This leads into a discussion of the nature of mathematical creativity and what has been learned about it since Poincare gave his famous lecture on the subject just a century ago. Another change from past custom is that I will not provide a meal. Instead I will arrange for all who are interested to go to the Yangming Restaurant for dinner after the seminar. Yangming is an elegant chinese restaurant near Villanova. The cost of the meal will be $27.50 and a cash bar will be available. Because of the nature of the occasion it is important that you please notify me by June 23 if you would like to join us for dinner. Directions: If you drive to the meeting, enter Villanova by the main gate on Ithan Avenue, just north of Lancaster Avenue (route 30), opposite the Pavilion. Tell the guard you are attending the History of Mathematics Seminar. Ask for directions either to the Mendel Lot, where there is limited parking around the greenhouse, or to the St. Augustine lot. From the Mendel Lot, enter the building by the right door under the arch connecting wings of the building, go up one flight of stairs, turn left and follow the hall to room 103, on the left. From the St. Augustine Lot walk past the St. Augustine Center for the Liberal Arts to the main entrance of the Mendel Science Center. Inside Mendel go up one flight and walk the full length of the hall to room 103, on the left. If you will need elevator assistance, please call me at 610-247-5430. Public transportation: Take SEPTA's R5 train to the Villanova station. If outbound from center city go down through the tunnel to the inbound side. From the inbound platform a few steps lead to the Mendel parking lot. Walk straight ahead to the entrance on the right under the arch connecting wings of the building, go up one flight of stairs, turn left and follow the hall to room 103, on the left. Thomas L.
