Subject: For the list From: Mark Hovey Date: 19 Sep 1999 08:48:48 -0400 It looks as if Wesleyan may have a 3 semester (!) visiting position from January 2000 to July 2001. This is an unusual situation in response to an unexpected death in the department. Everything is up in the air at the moment, but if you are interested, please write to me as soon as possible--we will have a department meeting Wednesday, where we may make some initial decisions about the position. Here are the details: 1. The teaching load is 2 courses per semester. You will probably get stuck teaching "reform calculus" at least one semester. The teaching is pretty independent--if you are a grad student with no teaching experience, this will be something of a drawback, as it is definitely a sink or swim teaching environment. 2. The only algebraic topologists in the state of Connecticut are me, Wojtek Chacholski at Yale, and Vince Giambalvo at UConn. So the seminar situation is problematic--I usually try to make it up to the MIT seminar, about a 2 hour drive, every two weeks or so. New York is also about 2 hours away, and is home to Rob Thompson, Martin Bendersky, and Bill Singer. 3. Wesleyan is a snooty liberal arts school, known for liberal students and Asian music and John Cage. Middletown is a small town in a state full of small towns. 4. It is very very unlikely that anyone hired for this temporary job will get a tenure-track position here.
