Subject: Tentative conference schedule for 2003 Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 17:17:26 +1100 (EST) From: Amnon Neeman To: amnon.neeman@anu.edu.au Dear Colleagues, You might remember that we will be holding a special year in algebraic geometry and topology in Canberra, in 2003. At the moment we have only very limited funding for the special year, but I have now applied for a great deal more. The funding will not be decided until probably August or September 2002. We will be holding a two-week conference on topology, from Monday July 14 to Friday July 26 2003. Of course, the nature of the conference will depend greatly on the funding, and the detailed planning will only seriously start once we know how much money we have. But the organising committee felt we should advertise the conference now, to allow people time to make their plans and apply for outside travel money. We would be grateful if you could give us some indication of the number of people who might come. If you would like to come, please respond to this email. There might also be an algebraic geometry conference during the period before July 4, but the organising committee is still undecided on the format. The week of Monday July 7 to Friday July 11 there will be an international congress of applied mathematics in Sydney. The congress is called ICIAM (=International Congress for Industrial and Applied Mathematics). The Australian Mathematical Society will be holding its annual meeting in Sydney as a small offshoot of ICIAM, during that same week. Sydney is about 275 kilometers northeast of Canberra (a comfortable three-hour drive). So you might have the chance of going to three conferences in a row, two in Canberra and one in Sydney, sandwiched in between. The reason for the tight scheduling is that all this conferencing must take place during our winter vacation. July is the middle of winter here. Yours, Amnon
