Subject: [Fwd: The Banff protocol & high journal prices] From: "Dr A. J. Baker" Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2007 09:48:54 +0100 (BST) Many of us have concerns about the ever increasing costs of journals, especially those published by large commercial publishers. Recently there have been at least two well publicised casers of editoruial boards resigning and the issue keeps coming back when library budgets are squeezed. In 2005, a group of mathematicians met at the BIRS conference centre and produced the BANFF PROTOCOL: > > We agree neither to submit to, referee for, nor participate in the > > operation of any journal that charges an excessively high per page > > subscription fee, as compared to the average of the 25 highest impact > > journals in pure mathematics. Obviously the intention is that as many people as possible sign up to this and bear the issue in mind when selecting journals to submit papers to or refereeing. Further information can be found at http://members.cox.net/banffprotocol/ where you can also add your name to the list of signatories. You can also help by publicising this to colleagues, putting links on web sites, etc. Andy Dr A. J.
