Separation and Classification of EEG Responses to Color Stimuli

Studying EEG responses to external stimulus is an effective method for further understanding how the brain works; it is known that the brain will emit specific EEG responses to visual stimulus. In addition, current work in identifying statistical features of EEG responses to different monochromatic stimuli suggests the possibility for the classification of EEG responses in relation to color. We seek to prove that the human brain will respond in a predictable manner when given particular visual stimulus. In this study, we used EEG data from a previous research experiment which was found to have the possibility for classification through identifying third order moments. In order to classify these responses, we used Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to isolate color related responses from other background scene related responses and a Support Vector Machines (SVM) to classify these color related responses per colors shown.

Ollie Fosu is a sophomore engineering student born in Detroit, Michigan, he spent the summer of 2014 as an EXCEL scholar at Lafayette College. He worked under the supervision of Professor Ismail Jouny in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, and hopes to see his work in separation and classification of EEG signals furthered in the near-future.
About Kyle Phillips:
Kyle is a sophomore at Lafayette College pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He began his research for Professor Jouny the summer of 2014. Since, he has studied a few applications of Support Vector Machines including its uses in classifying EEG signals and its uses in a melanoma detection smart phone application. Kyle is also presenting his research at the Northeast Bio-engineering Conference at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in late April. In addition to research, he is a member of the Lafayette Track and Field team, the Community Service Chair for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and an avid musician.
