The next wave of female engineers

Lehigh Engineering hosts area middle school girls in Spring CHOICES event at Mountaintop

Female middle school students from the Lehigh Valley and beyond came to Lehigh's Mountaintop campus for Spring CHOICES 2018, a single-day event showcasing the importance of engineering.

Mentors from Lehigh's Society of Women Engineers (SWE) helped guide over 60 visiting scholars through the day's activities, including team balloon tower building, a water filtration project and a coding event that had students program a robot to navigate different courses.

Students participated in a liquid nitrogen (LIN) demonstration led by LIN ambassadors from Allentown-based Air Products. Cryogenic grinding and freezing techniques were introduced to the group, including learning how to make flash freeze ice cream.

Teams also worked together in a new type of egg drop competition called the "Fed-Egg Drop." Here, mentors and students created a shipping container that could protect an egg from a three-story fall. Judges were on hand to choose the best projects based on weight, design quality and the container's ability to protect the egg.

CHOICES is supported by the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science and industry partners Bosch Rexroth, Air Products and Boeing.
