To answer Steve Wilson's question, I have used the following instruction 
to reduce diagrams (used in our book with Aguilar and Gitler, for 
instance. See p. 365):

$$\def\objectstyle{\scriptstyle}
  \def\labelstyle{\scriptstyle}
  \vcenter{\xymatrix @-1.2pc {
PUT HERE THE USUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE DIAGRAM
}$$

Note that the -1.2 is the factor used to shorten the arrows.  One can, of 
course, play around with this number.
