Subject: Re: five postings From: "Nicholas J. Kuhn" Date: Mon, 13 Dec 2004 15:42:08 -0500 These dubious requests for help seem similar in spirit to the many messages that (US) math departments get sent at this time of the year that come from distant countries and go something `I very much want to study with you, and, by the way, can you have the admissions fee and GRE test requirements waived for me?'. At the next level of `unfortunate events' comes plagarism of papers: I think last year there was a fairly flamboyant case in PDE's (someone with multiple papers in Math Review not of his own work). The AMS has endorsed a nice set of ethical guidelines, which addresses responsibilities of authors, journals, editors, and referees, among others. I think it is well written, and encourage everyone to read these at http://www.ams.org/secretary/ethics.html. And then follow them.
