Dr. Berger's research is focused on problems at the interface of biophysics and engineering, with applications in diverse areas such as mechanisms of transmembrane signal transduction, scalable biosynthesis of advanced functional nanomaterials, biosurfactant design to improve drug bioavailability and biofilm structure in multi-drug resistant pathogens. A common theme throughout these projects is understanding the interrelationship between protein structure, molecular recognition and biological function.

Their work is highly collaborative, and the team works extensively with clinicians and biomedical scientists at Lehigh Valley Hospital, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Mayo Clinic as well as local industrial research groups.

Research in the Berger group is support by grants from the NSF and NIH, and has been recognized with a 2012 NSF BRIGE award, 2013 SBIR/STTR National Innovation Award and 2015 NSF CAREER award.
