LVAIC Information Literacy Symposium Call for Proposals

LVAIC Information Literacy Symposium
Inquiry in the Information Age: Information Literacy as Critical Thinking

The 1st LVAIC Information Literacy Symposium will be held May 18, 2017 9:30am-3:30pm at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. This event will bring together LVAIC faculty, librarians, and other educators invested in information literacy as critical thinking.

How are information literacy and critical thinking related? Information literacy is thinking critically about the consumption and production of information and participation in the information ecosystem. This symposium seeks to join these two concepts in the service of forwarding an intercampus and interdisciplinary conversation. How can we as educators shape a pedagogy where these two work together? What might that look like? And what kind of impact can it have?

Call for Proposals

We seek proposals for presentations that reveal successes and challenges in information literacy teaching and learning and inspire intercampus dialog about our future information literacy teaching practices. Themes may include, for example, but are not limited to:

  • A social justice lens on information access, production, value, and dissemination
  • Information literacy as a tool toward civic and community engagement
  • Learner-centered inquiry - students as collaborators and knowledge creators
  • The art and science of asking good questions - the hardest part of a research assignment which often goes overlooked
  • Bringing hypothetical scenarios, service learning, fieldwork, or lived experiences into information literacy teaching and learning
  • Pedagogy and assignments that illustrate a disciplinary perspective on information literacy such as varying perspectives on authority
  • Preparing students for post-graduation/workplace information literacy needs

Proposals from librarians and/or faculty in all disciplines and levels welcome! Presenters will be awarded a small honorarium in recognition of their time and effort.
