Digitizing Democracy: A Quantitative Perspective on the Legislative Archive and the Rise of the Majority Rule

Majoritarianism is a precondition for partisan and democratic politics, but we know very little about how it came to dominate collective decision-making in representative assemblies. In this lecture, Dr. Bulman will discuss his project, "The Rise of the Majority", which examines the changing nature of individual and collective political decision-making in the early modern British Atlantic.

Dr. William "Bill" Bulman is a historian of Britain and its empire who teaches in History and Global Studies at Lehigh. His work focuses on politics, religion, and culture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and in particular on the causes, nature, and consequences of the English Revolution. His first book, Anglican Enlightenment, offers a re-interpretation of the early Enlightenment and the religious politics of later Stuart England and its empire. Bulman holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University.
