Policy changes regarding unwanted email

This is message 2 regarding changes to the Lehigh email server effective 11/1/14

Who should read this:
Faculty, staff, retirees, spouses, departmental email account holders (“IN” accounts) and others who use Lehigh’s legacy email. Lehigh Gmail users are not affected.

What will change after the upgrade on November 1?

  • Mail flagged as SPAM will be automatically moved to a folder named SPAM and not retained in the Inbox.
  • Items in the SPAM and Trash* folders older than 30 days will be automatically and permanently deleted. Do not store messages that are needed in TRASH*.

What should I do?

  • Do not use SPAM or Trash* for storing messages.
Some people use the “delete” function (move to Trash*) as a convenient way to defer consideration of some messages to a later time, moving such messages out of the Inbox. However, Trash and SPAM folders are not intended to be locations for long-term message storage.
  • If you follow this practice, BEFORE November 1st you should create a different folder for this purpose, and use the "move to" function to place these messages in the new folder. Remember, "delete" explicitly means "I don’t want this any more."

LTS recommends people who use legacy email move to Lehigh Gmail for enhanced security, spam protection, and storage. LTS staff are available to help you make this transition smoothly.

* NOTE: The Trash folder is also sometimes displayed as "Deleted", "Delete Messages", and "Deleted Items" in different mail programs.
