Recently, two Lehigh users’ account credentials were compromised and those email accounts were then used to send large amounts of spam. As a result, the Lehigh mail server has been blocked by some email service providers.
Who does this affect? This does not affect users of Lehigh Google Mail(Gmail). Users of our legacy email service, typically accessed using Thunderbird or IMP/LehighWebmail, may be affected. In most cases, these users receive an email that a message was rejected and undeliverable.
What can I do if my message is rejected?
- Temporarily use Lehigh Gmail to re-send your message. Lehigh Gmail is available at http://www.lehigh.edu/google -- use your Lehigh username and password to log in.
- Consider migrating permanently to Lehigh Gmail. Contact your LTS Computing Consultant or the Help Desk for more information.
What is Library and Technology Services doing to resolve this issue?
- The compromised accounts have been identified and reset to prevent further abuse.
- LTS is working with the relevant service providers to resolve this issue. This process may span multiple weeks while the providers verify that the situation has been remedied.
- LTS continues to invest in tools, techniques, policies, and security awareness programs to limit these occurrences. Learn more about our training programs by visiting http://lts.lehigh.edu/services/security-training.
LTS is committed to a safe and secure computing environment. With many attackers sending a tremendous amount of email phishing messages and capturing logon credentials, we ask our Lehigh community to be especially vigilant. LTS posts the most recent phishing attempts at http://lts.lehigh.edu/services/explanation/phishing-identity-theft.
