    This workshop is designed to provide librarians with an overview of the current status of the U.S. copyright law and its impact on library services. Emphasis is on the copyright status of print, audiovisual and electronic information as well as computer programs, databases, electronic journals and the Internet and World Wide Web. Participants will focus on copyright law basics and learn to evaluate potential uses of copyrighted works in libraries and to apply considerations for formulating institutional and organizational copyright policies. Specific provisions of the U. S. copyright Act, existing guidelines, and library association response to pending Congressional proposals will be reviewed. Recent court decisions relating to infringement, fair use and reproduction of copyrighted works in libraries in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors and in educational institutions are discussed.
*Funded by the Federal Library Services and Technology Act, the workshop provides a total of six Continuing Education hours recorgnized by Commonwealth Libraries.

    Laura N. Gasaway (Lolly) is Director of the Kathrine R. Everett Law Library and professor of law at the University of North Carolina.  She has authored many articles and books on the topic of copyright and libraries. She teaches courses in Intellectual Property and Cyberspace Law in the law school and Law Librarianship and Legal Resources in the School of Information and Library Science at UNC.  Prof. Gasaway is past president of the American Association of Law Libraries and is a Fellow of the Special Libraries Association and for both associations has chaired their copyright committees.  She has written widely on both copyright and law library management issues and is a frequent speaker on these issues.  She writes the Copyright Corner for SLA's Information Outlook and has a copyright column in Against the Grain.  Her web page provides more information about her research and recent publications.


Directions to Iacocca Hall #111 on Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus:

From Interstate 78 East or West: Take the Hellertown Exit. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp on to Route 412 SOUTH. Follow 1.3 miles into Hellertown to traffic light. Turn right onto Water Street, which becomes Friedensville Road). Follow 1.2 miles. Turn right onto Mountain Drive. (Lehigh’s Goodman Campus on right.) Continue on Mountain Drive 1.8 miles to the fork at the top of the mountain. At "Y" bear right onto the Mountaintop Campus. Iacocca Hall (TOWER Building) is straight ahead; for visitor parking is south of the Hall; turn just right before the building and go straight.

From Route 22: Take the Route 378 in Bethlehem. (Rt. 378 heads south only.) Continue for 3.6 miles to the Lehigh River Bridge. Follow Route 378 south through Bethlehem and to the top of South Mountain. Before the traffic light bear to right onto jughandle; at stop sign turn left. Cross over Route 378 to Mountain Drive. At "Y" bear right to Mountain Drive South. At next "Y" bear left onto Mountaintop Campus. Iacocca Hall is straight ahead; visitor parking is to the right before the building.

From Route 476 (Pa Turnpike): Exit at Allentown. Go east on Route 22. Follow the directions for Route 22 above.
