Subject: for the list: a question for the editors of the new topology journal From: "Nicholas J. Kuhn" Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 14:42:59 -0500 Here at Virginia, the beginning of the new Journal of Topology has stimulated some discussion about both adding and dropping subscriptions to the obvious suspects. Something I have wondered about ... Have the libraries at the schools (Stanford, Oxford, etc.) of the editors who resigned from Topology and became editors of the Journal of Topology dropped their subscriptions to Topology? (And if so, starting with what issue?) Some of these schools have resources beyond most of us, and it would be a bit "ironic" (or substitute a stronger word) if such schools maintained their blanket journal coverage, while fighting the bad publishers so publically. It would seem appropriate to have Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, and European equivalents, lead the way in dropping overpriced journals - and thus be the first ones to have incomplete collections of major journals. Other musings ... what does one do about high priced journals that have upgraded the quality of their offerings? Among `mid level' journals, Topology and its Applications has done this over the years, as has JPAA. Among `high end' journals, Advances in Math is a whole ton more receptive to the interests of this list than was the case in the old Rota-fiefdom days. That said, I personally welcome good journals published by the big math societies, and am happy to say that U Virginia has had paid subscriptions to AGT and GT (+ monographs) since they were offered.
