Date: Sat, 11 Jul 1998 11:27:24 -0400 (EDT) From: Jack Morava Subject: xxx hegemony I saw a proclamation by some net.prophet recently, maybe in Wired, that `Attention is the ultimate scarce resource', and it occurred to me that this is relevant to the hopf / xxx discussion. xxx brings to mind those refitted coal mines in West Virginia where the government supposedly keeps its old documents: it's nice to know it's there, I guess, but it's not really that friendly a place to visit. hopf has much more the feeling of a neighborhood bar, where friends gather to trade the latest gossip. These seem to be very different ecological niches and there is surely enough room on the net for both; sites like hopf serve to focus attention among a community of specialists, whereas big institutions like xxx are probably better suited to be archives of record. My inclination right now is to post early versions on hopf, and the final revision on xxx; maybe some concensus will evolve.
