Subject: Euler characteristics

I would like to pose the following question to the alg. topology list
(if you take naive questions from non-topologists):

For a given n, what integers can occur as the Euler Characteristic of a
compact orientable manifold of dimension 2n?  In particular, can it be
that for n odd the Euler characteristic must be even?
