Using SSH's Secure File Transfer for Web Management


To install SSH with Secure File Transfer

SSH is available from the Security Software download page: https://www.lehigh.edu/security/download/

It is also available from the Install Software icon for on-campus users.

To connect to your webspace with SSH

  1. Open SSH
  2. Click on the File menu and choose Connect.

  3. In the Connect to Remote Host window:

  4. If it tells you that the server is sending a 'new key' then click 'Yes' to accept it:
  5. In the Enter Password window, type your password.
  6. You will see an Windows-Explorer type window open up with the contents of your NS space. Double-click on the folder 'webspace'.
  7. To go into specific subdirectories, double-click them in the window.
To go to another's webspace directory than your own webspace, or if you do not have a webspace folder:
Log in as described above.
  1. From the Operation menu, choose 'Go to Folder'
  2. In the Go To Folder window, enter:

  3. /ahome/userid/public/www-data/
    where userid is the userid of the webspace you wish to go to. If you wish to go to a specific subdirectory, enter
    /ahome/userid/public/www-data/directoryname

    and hit ok to connect.

Moving documents from your computer to the webspace and vice versa

Once you are connected with SSH, there are two ways to upload (copy) material to the webspace:

Upload directly:

  1. From the Operation menu, choose 'Upload' ,

  2. or click on the Up arrow in the button bar Up arrow
  3. In the Upload File window, select the file(s) you want to upload. (To select a file, click on it. To select multiple files, hold down the shift key while clicking on them. To change drives, choose the drive from the 'Look In:' drop down menu. To go into a folder, click on it.)

  4. Click the Upload button in the Upload File window.
  5. You may see an 'Uploading' progress window (sometimes it goes past too quickly to be seen). When that window closes, you will see the file in your webspace directory listing.

Drag and Drop (or Copy and Paste) from an Windows Explorer Window:

  1. To open an Explorer window to copy from, click on the Window menu and choose 'New Explorer'.
  2. Find the file you want in the Explorer window.
  3. Click/select the file(s) and drag them into the SSH webspace window.

  4. You will see an 'Uploading' progress window. When that window closes, you will see the file in your webspace directory listing.
You can also click on a file in the Explorer window, cut or copy it, and then click on the SSH window and paste the file to upload it.

Be sure to upload any graphics or other dependent files as well as the main file; SSH will not do this automatically for you.

Viewing and Deleting web documents with SSH

To view a document from your webspace, double-click on it. SSH will download it into a temporary directory and open it with whichever browser or other application you have defined for that file type. (For web pages, it will open it in whatever your default browser is.

To delete a document from your webspace, click on it and press the delete key. You will be asked if you are sure you wish to delete the item. Click on 'Yes' and it will be deleted.

Downloading documents

  1. Open an Windows Explorer window and find the folder you want to download the documents to ( click on the Window menu and choose 'New Explorer')
  2. In the SSH window, select the documents you want to download, and drag them to the Explorer Window and into the folder you want them in.
OR
  1. Select the documents in the SSH window.
  2. From the Operation menu, choose 'Download', or click on the down arrow in the button bar Down Arrow
  3. In the Download window, select the folder you wish to download the  documents to.
  4. Click Download.
  5. You will see a 'Downloading' progress window, listing the items being downloaded. When the download is finished, the window will close.

Disconnecting

To disconnect from the remote site, go to the File menu and choose Disconnect:

When asked if you want to disconnect, click Yes.
Then click on the close box for the window or choose Exit from the File menu to get out of SSH.
