Web Management: Departmental Pages

Setting up WebSpace
Managing Web Space
Course pages
Adding Additional Authors

Lehigh Departments and Offices are encouraged to set up their own web pages. To do so, they need:

  1. A departmental AFS account. (Many departments already have an AFS/Network Server account. If not, you may request one by obtaining a form from Client Services.)
  2. A departmental webspace (acquired by going to http://www.lehigh.edu/account and running W3Setup on the departmental account)
  3. Some idea of what they want to put on the web
  4. A web-capable staff member
  5. A person or persons to put up web pages (this can be a student, a staff member, faculty, etc.)

Note: it is tempting to hire a student to create and maintain your departmental and office web pages. This is fine, but there should be some full time staff member in your area who is familar enough with web authoring to supervise the student and maintain the web page when the student is not available (vacations, exams, graduation, etc.).

It is suggested that departments set up group of authors who can maintain their web pages, and give them rights to edit in your web space (seeAdding Additional Authors for instructions). That way, no-one except the department coordinator need have access to the departmental account main password and email.

It is also suggested that you use the Network Server main forwarding option (enter moptions, then enter an email address in "Forward all mail to") to forward the mail to that account to the coordinator, the chair, or the head of the department.
