Web page counters and trackers

Counters generally display a graphic or number on the page, indicating either how many times it has been accessed since the counter was added ('hits'), or how many unique visitors (visitors from different IP addresses) have added it.

Trackers keep track of and report to you more detailed data about the page being tracked, such as total visits, visits by time of day, date, etc., what browsers were being used, what domains they are coming from, even what pages they are coming to your page from (referring pages).  Some trackers can even give you the IP address of the computers that your page has been viewed from (which may be a privacy concern for some users).

Almost all page-based counters and trackers require you to insert something on the page(s) to be counted or tracked. That may be a graphic, a link, script, or a Javascript. One problem with this is that most of these additions will be broken or removed when you edit the page with Netscape, so plan to use Dreamweaver or another form of site editing when putting a counter on your page.

Lehigh's counter

This a pretty simple one, with only one set of digits. It will definitely break if you use Netscape to edit the page, unless you have Netscape Composer options set NOT to keep the images with the page.
Instructions for using Lehigh's counter are available here:

Counters and Trackers from other sources

This list does not constitute an endorsement. Please use these trackers at your own risk and discretion.
Some free counters and trackers may require you to display a banner ad; most will require your page to have a link to their website. Some Javascript-based additions may slow down or even crash your page on non-Javascript-enabled browsers.

All the services listed here were free as of 12/12/01, but many offer additional 'premium' services for a fee.
