Tintern Abbey was founded in 1131 in the reign of Henry I, son of William the Conqueror. The original Norman buildings were rebuilt in the 13th century and the abbey church was rebuilt in about 1300. Henry VIII's Act for the Dissolution of the Monastaries led to suppression of Tintern in 1536. Today, the walls remain, in most places up to the roofline. The path passes 500 feet above the abbey across the River Wye.
