Day Three - 17.5 miles

Pandy to Hay-on-Wye

MThis is the day of the Hatterall Ridge, a wonderfully scenic walk 1,000 feet above the valley floors on either side through heather. Click here for a panoramic view of the Hatterall Ridge. The footing is rocky in some places and spongy peat in others. I met several walkers going in the other direction, and one expedition of pony riders. The descent to Hay-on-Wye is steep.

MHay-on-Wye was probably settled in about 1090 after being used by the Romans as an outpost much earlier than that. Today, it's a book lover's heaven. Richard Booth Booksellers, headquartered here in Hay Castle, supplies books to all parts of the world. Dozens of other book shops deal in speciality areas, and the town hosts a book fair in May. Other trendy shops line the streets, and there are many fine pubs and bed and breakfast establishments.
