Day Eight- 11 miles, 1800 feet ascent

Keld to Reeth

There are several alternatives on the path between Keld and Reeth. For one, this is a short walk and could easily be combined with the next section to Richmond for those in a hurry. The Wainwright path climbs into the industrial past where lead was mined and smelted in the 19th century.
Many of the old buildings lie in ruins in the area of Gunnerside Gill and beyond. Friends had suggested that I take the lower route along the River Swale. I was set to do that, but decided instead to join some British hikers and see the ruins. The river walk is much more beautiful, I'm told. But the ruins were an interesting window into Britain's industrial past. Next time, I'll take the river route.
Reeth is a pleasant place with an expansive village green and several good pubs and a folk museum.
