Day
Four - 9 miles, 2000 feet ascent
Grasmere to Patterdale
The fourth
day's walk offers three interesting possibilities. The path
begins with a long ascent to Grisdale Tarn. Then it's time for
a decision. The first and easiest option is to go down through
the valley along Grisdale Beck to Patterdale. A second option
is to take the high route over St. Sunday Crag. This adds about
1,000 feet in elevation and an extra hour to the day's journey.
The third option is to traverse Helvellyn, which adds two miles
and 1,500 feet in elevation and takes an extra two hours.
Unfortunately, this decision was made
for me. When I arrived at Grisdale Tarn, both the high routes
were covered in heavy mist. I opted for the valley and had an
easy walk down into Patterdale.
