Day One - 14 miles, 1900 feet ascent

St. Bees to Ennerdale

A brisk, clear morning. Deep blue sky over the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man just visible on the horizon. The path begins with a climb up South Head and continues along the coastline before turning east. The mountains of the Lake District come into view on the walk across farmland and through the village of Cleator.
Then the gradual climb up Dent Hill, where at the cairn on top a magnificent view back toward the coastline opens up. It's the first promise of many fine high points to follow. A steep descent leads to Nannycatch Gate, then a delightful valley walk and down the road into Ennerdale Bridge.
