  • EP A2 = application without search report
  • EP A3 = search report (with republished first page of the EP A2 it supports)
  • EP B1 = granted European Patent

  • Japanese patent system
        from Derwent (http://www.derwent.com)
  • JP = Japanese patent (before 1996, the Japanese terms [Kokai, Kokoku] were more commonly used, and numbering       followed the year in the reign of the current Emperor)
  • Kokai = unexamined Japanese patent application (first stage in Japanese patent process; good until either challenged or fully granted)
  • Kokoku = examined and allowed Japanese patent application (second stage in Japanese patent process; ceased in 1996)

  • World patent system
        from WIPO site (http://www.wipo.int)
  • PCT = Patent Cooperation Treaty (WIPO)
  • WO = World patent
  • WIPO = World Intellectual Property Organization

  • Finding "Equivalents"

    Notes:
  • For legal purposes, these patents are not exact equivalents, but they do describe the same process.
  • Although this procedure is usually followed to find an English translation of a non-English patent, it's also useful for tracing "patent families,"  a series of related patents.

  • Chemical Abstacts Patent Index    [FM-1-RI Chemical Abstracts 1907-1999]
The index includes a list of other countries' patents that are "equivalents" to the patent indexed.  Because equivalents often appear years later,  start with the year your patent was issued and check the next 5 years (or more).  The index is arranged by country, then patent number.  Look up the number of the original patent; pay careful attention to the "A1, B2" etc. extensions, if any.  Remember, Chemical Abstracts only indexes "chemical" patents.

Chemical Abstracts SciFinder Scholar    [1907 to date]
Search for the author(s) of the original patent.  Limit the results to patents.  Click on the  to see the abstract.  Click on the Patent Family Information link to see if there are any related patents.  Note: because of web access to many patent offices, it may be possible to obtain a free copy of the patent by clicking on the  and following the links.

US Patent and Trademark Office    [http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html]

Use the Boolean Search and search for the inventor(s) and keywords from the title.  If patents are found that appear similar to the patent you seek, check the U.S. References and Foreign References sections of the patent for the number of your patent.  If your patent is referenced, chances are good that you have found equivalent(s).
