CITIES IN SCHOOLS

President -Bill Milliken

Cities In Schools, Inc. (CIS) is the nation's largest nonprofit dropout prevention organization -- a national leader in promoting and facilitating the coordinated delivery of existing health, social, education and other support services at educational sites for the benefit of youth and their families.

FACT: Each school day 3,000 young people drop out of school . That's nearly 600,000 kids lost each year.

FACT: In major urban areas the dropout rate is as high as 50 percent.

FACT: Eighty-two percent of prison inmates...85 percent of j uveniles in court .... are dropouts.

FACT: The unemployment rate for dropouts is more than double the rate for high school graduates.

From New York City to Honolulu, more than 60,000 young people in 146 communities are being reconnected to their futures through the CIS method of personal, accountable, and coordinated services delivered at the schoolhouse.

At Lehigh University, an exciting collaboration has been launched to turn this crisis around. Cities In Schools (CIS) has established its national Trainin g Institute at the National Center for Partnership Development (NCPD), located at the University's Mountaintop Campus.

Troubled youth need the kind of help that teachers aren't usually equipped to provide: health care, drug use prevention, counseling for emotional problems, family services, career planning. Usually to access these services students must leave the schoolhouse and find them on their own.

CIS brings help into the school instead. Through the combined power of public /private partnerships, CIS leverages existing resources and repositions service providers into the schools, to serve alongside teachers, parents, and volunteers as a coordinated "family" team in the battle to keep children in school.

THE TRAINING

CIS training is free of charge -- trainees are responsible only for their own travel, lodging, and meal expenses.

The CIS coursed, developed by Lehigh's College of Education , use a new educational breakthrough called hypermedia.

Hypermedia is a way to utilize the power of personal computers to combine full-motion video, slides, text, training manuals, group discussions, individual workbooks, and interactive exercises.
