Purpose & Mission
Purpose
The purpose of the Division 17 Special Interest Group on
Supervision and Training is to serve as a forum for those who
train and supervise student and professional therapists,
counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers as
well as those who train and supervise supervisors. The group aims
to serve educators, researchers, and practitioners engaged in
training or supervising mental health service providers.
Additional Objectives:
-- to stimulate research (especially collaborative &
multi-site endeavors), theorizing, & thinking about training
and supervision in a multicultural framework
-- to serve as a forum to discuss and address practical issues
arising from training or supervision
-- to share ideas, experiences, insights, and knowledge
-- to stimulate interest in therapist training, supervision, and
supervisor training
-- to recognize and facilitate the development of diverse and
innovative strategies related the training and supervision of
therapists and supervisors
-- to serve as a resource of research and practice articles and
syllabi for researchers, teachers, and practitioners of
supervision
Membership
Membership to the ST SIG is open to APA fellows, members,
associate members, and student affiliates.
Membership in Division 17 is not required. Our goal is to be
inclusive rather than exclusive.
Organizational Structure
The ST SIG adheres to the APA and Division 17 SIG rules and
procedures. The current organizational structure consists of two
co-chairs and members. The initial co-chairs were self-appointed
and serve a two year term. Subsequent chairs may be elected by a
majority vote of the ST SIG members and will serve two year
terms. At present, the ST SIG co-chairs are:
