Workshop 1: Exploring NetscapeStart Netscape - Start MS-Windows (type 'win' at the prompt); double-click to open the program group 'Network Applications' in the main window; when it is displayed, find and double-click on 'Netscape'.
Lehigh's home page should be automatically loaded
Explore the menus - click on 'File'
Click on 'Open Location' - a dialog box comes up in the middle of the screen; It should contain http://www.lehigh.edu/ - Lehigh's home page location. You can type in the URL of the location you want to see next, and click on the 'Open' button to go there; for now, click on 'Close' to stay where you are.
Next click on Edit, View, Go... to see the various menu items that are available to you. Look at all of them, (and don't forget Help).
You can explore What's Cool, What's New, etc. later on.
Edit includes Cut, Paste and Find.
View has one important option, which we will return to frequently throughout this seminar: View Source, which allows you to see the code that created the document (what the information provider coded in HTML).
Bookmarks will save the address (URL) of this page (Add Bookmark) so that at any time you can return here (View Bookmarks).
Go keeps a recent history of where you have been so that you can return to places just visited (in case you didn't notice how important they were until you left them).
Options has to do with how you want Netscape to behave (for you); this includes the font to use for text, the background color, how links appear, and a wide variety of other things as well. Especially notice the options within Preferences.
Click on Handbook. This is the manual for Netscape...
Click on Back, click on Forward, click on Home...
Reload will be discussed later.
Open is another way to request the same thing as File--Open Location from the menus.
Print will let you print the page you are looking at. Beware: not everything looks as good when reduced to black and white...
Find is a search capability on the current document, (the same as Edit--Find from the menus).
Notice Stop. This can be a very useful tool. If you made a mistake in getting a link, or finding / loading a document, this will stop document retrieval, so you can try something else.
