Day3 Workshop - Hypertext Links

1. You are going to log in to the network server:
   • Make sure you are out of windows: double click on the box in the upper left hand corner of windows screen, or select exit from the file menu.
   • Either use access or 'telnet ns' to access the network server.
   • Log in using your network server account.
2. You will be editing your homepage.
   • Type in scan /ahome/userid/public/www-data
   • Place an e next to the entry for your homepage and press enter.
   • You should now be looking at your homepage in HTML code.
3. Essentially you will be adding an unordered list to your homepage containing 2 text entries which will be anchors for other documents (eg hypertext links). To do this you will be using a <ul>....</ul> tag set for an unordered list, and multiple <li> tags for entries in that list . Please note that you actually do not need to have either document to make the entries; no checking is done to confirm whether the documents are there or not
   .
   • Somewhere within your home page, place a header(the text you use is up to you), (<h2>...</h2>), followed by the <ul> tag.
   • Under that header, add the following 2 lines to your homepage:

     <li><a href="benefit.html">
     Staff Benefits Document</a>
     <li><a href="http://www.lehigh.edu/~inwww/seminar/expense.html">
     Expense Manual </a>

   • After the above statements remember to place the </ul> which ends the unordered list.
4. F3 the edit, and F3 the scan to go back to the main menu.
5. Use lynx to view the new homepage:
   
6. Type lynx to bring up lynx with the Lehigh homepage, then type g and load the URL:
   http://www.lehigh.edu/~userid/userid.html
7. Your homepage should appear with the new lines in white.
8. If you have the documents, click on the new lines and you should get the documents.
9. Use netscape to view your homepage.
   • Start windows
   • Start netscape
   • Either use (click on) file and open location, or the |open| button just under the command bar, to load:
     http://www.lehigh.edu/~userid/userid.html

     This is what it looks like under netscape.

10. Optionally, you may submit your homepage to Lehigh's homepage so that you may search for it; and you may place a graphic on your homepage.
    • To submit your homepage go to Lehigh's homepage:
      • Go to the bottom of Lehigh's homepage,
      • Click on ...become an information provider on Lehigh's Server...
      • On the new page, click on HOW do I provide the information?
      • Read and do #2 and #3(Submit your Home Page only) of the Instructions for Individuals header.
      • You are now on.
    • To place a graphic, there are a number of graphic libraries, but for ease of use we have placed one at:

      http://www.lehigh.edu/~jct3/icons/

      Choose a graphic (name is on the library page), and place it in your Home Page where you wish. You will need the entire url though.
