Microsoft Visual Studio installation instructions

Before you begin the install:

  1. This procedure may take approximately 30 minutes and use up to 500 MB of disk space if you choose to install all of the products. We recommend, however, that you only install the Visual C++ software for this course.
  2. This software was written to run under Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, and NT 4.0. Note that it was released prior to the release of Windows XP, so there may be some compatibility issues, however, we have had no problems running it under XP Professional.
  3. Find the Product Number, labeled CDKey on back cover of the first disk sleeve. You will need to enter this during the installation process.
  4. Exit any running programs, especially your virus protection program. You will need to restart your computer at the end of the installation.
  5. Have administrator privileges if you will be installing on an NT, 2000, or XP system

Installation Notes:

  1. Refer to the README file for more detailed instructions. Place the Microsoft Visual Studio v6.0 Disk 1 CD in your computer. It will automatically run. If you have the autorun feature turned off on your computer please go to your CD ROM drive and double click on the file “setup.exe”.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions. When prompted enter the proper “Product Number” found on the back cover of the first disc sleeve, labeled “CDKEY”.
  3. Select “Install Visual Studio 6.0 Professional Edition”, accept the default folder for installation. To install all components of Visual Studio select “Continue”. This standard installation requires approximately 436 MB of space, however, this course only requires Visual C++. You may only install Visual C++ if you wish.
  4. Do not select the Setup Environmental Variables option, and then select “OK”. The installation will begin. You will need to “Restart“ your computer when it is finished.
  5. After you have restarted you will be prompted to install the “MSDN” Library. This contains all of the online documentation and you should install it at this time. Make sure “Install MSDN” is checked, then select “Next”. Remove current Disk 1 and place Disk 5 in your CD ROM drive. Select “Ok”.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions. Choose “Typical” installation. There is no need to install the “Other Client Tools”. Do not install the “Server Setups”. You may register online if you wish.
  7. Installation complete

After the software is installed, refer to Unit 0 for information about using the software.
