Alpha Phi Omega (APO)

Alpha Phi Omega is a national co-ed community service fraternity with chapters in over 300 American universities and many chapters in other parts of the world.  We are the nation's largest intercollegiate fraternity.  We participate in service projects on and off campus and have regular brotherhood social events as well.  Membership is non-exclusive, and members can still join a fraternity/sorority. Minimum requirements for active membership are 10 hours of community service per semester, attendance to at least one social event, a short brotherhood meeting every 2 weeks, national dues of $25 per semester, and the completion of our pledge program.

Best Buddies

The mission of Best Buddies is to provide an opportunity for college students and persons with mild to moderate mental retardation to become friends. Since contact between college students and persons who are mentally disable seldom happen spontaneously, Best Buddies facilitates social contact by organizing group outings and requiring ongoing one-to-one activities for College Buddies and Buddies. Best Buddies seeks to contribute positively to the social and psychological development of all involved and to the community at large. Students increase their understanding of themselves and learn more about living together in a large and diverse community. For persons with mental disabilities, Best Buddies affords the opportunity to make new friends, go new places, and meet people who are outside of their often limited social settings. Best Buddies is a multi-purpose program; however, the key element is friendship and commitment to that friendship.

Engineers Without Borders

Engineers Without Borders (LU-EWB) is a multidisciplinary group of students dedicated to learning about and tackling issues of global poverty, international development, and sustainability.  Our mission is both to educate a new generation of students about global inequalities through on-campus speakers and workshops, as well as to use that knowledge to design workable solutions to real life problems. We are also a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life.  This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering systems that developing communities can own and operate without external assistance, thereby empowering such communities by enhancing local, technical, managerial, and entrepreneurial skills.  These projects are initiated by, and completed with, contributions from the host community working with our project team.  We are designing, funding, and implementing a small scale water treatment project in Pueblo Nuevo, a village of approximately 1,500 people in northwestern Honduras. We have completed a water storage tank and are currently making improvements to the distribution system and working on the design for water treatment. The project and our focus of study cover a wide range of issues, which calls for a wide range of skills and student backgrounds.  We are looking for students from all colleges and disciplines.
