Course Descriptions
Educational Leadership
EDL 400. Introduction to Organizational Leadership: Theory and Practice: Development of theories of administration and applications in educational institutions. Administrative behavior in organizational settings; administrator’s leadership role in decision-making, evaluation, and conflict resolution. Taught on campus and in Sligo, Ireland. EDL 420. Leading and Managing Curriculum and Instruction Programs: Exploration of the theory, research and practice associated with an effective curriculum and instruction program. Topics include program planning, implementation and evaluation, legal issues, contract management, and budgetary considerations. Emphasis on field-based research and data-based decision making in program design and evaluation.
EDL 422. Curriculum Management for the School Executive: A survey of the methods used to facilitate a curriculum development process based on the theories and findings from research and practice. Application of concepts to practical problems in curriculum leadership to acquire skills in the change process for instruction innovation. Emphasis on current theory and research in standards, technology, and curriculum integration. Course taught at Bucks County IU.
EDL 434. Leadership & Management of Special Education Programs: Introduction to the management practices related to
effective leadership of special education programs including
budget development and management, staffing,
instructional practices, student assessment practices, and
parent involvement.
EDL 442. Leadership & Management of Pupil Services Programs: Overview of the management practices related to effective
leadership of pupil services programs, including
budget development and management, staffing, instructional
practices, community agency partnerships, student
assessment, legal issues, and parent involvement.
EDL 467. Supervision and Professional Development: Emphasis on establishing skills in human resource management and supervision, including staff selection, supervision models, assessment and feedback methods, managing a diverse workforce, and adult development related to professional growth options. This course is designed specifically for individuals enrolled in a supervisory certification program.
EDL 470-010. Special Topics in EDL: Systems Tools: This course will focus on systems tools that can be used in schools and other learning communities to understand and explore the interactions and complexity of change in organizations. It will offer hands-on, relevant experiences with mapping, causal-loops diagrams, and structured diagrams – the tools and language of systems thinking and systems dynamics. The goal of applying these tools is to engage learners in meaningful conversations about our mental models and where we can apply leverage to make sustainable change. The tools can be used with students, teachers, parents, and the larger community to help us see the bigger picture and forces that influence the on-going process of change and learning.
EDL 470-011. Special Topics in EDL: Leading Safe Schools: This one-week course will cover mandated school safety procedures and trainings required by PDE, as well as current research on the impact of recent school crisis on students, districts, and learning. It will cover best practices in designing school safety plans, resources for preparedness trainings, designing table-top drills, recovery after tragedies and crisis, working with the media, writing Memorandums of Understanding and improving safety conditions in the larger school community. The course will also include PEMA training for NIMS 100 and ICS 700 certifications.
EDL 470-012. Special Topics in EDL: Special Education Law Symposium: EDL 470-012. Special Topics in EDL: Special Education Law Symposium: This intensive one-week course, followed a few weeks later by a final examination, provides content equivalent to EDL 432 but via a different format. This format includes an extended faculty of specialist presenters, two separate, differentiated tracks for basic and advanced participants, and an extensive course reference binder of legal materials. Topics will include eligibility, including RTI, FAPE, LRE, discipline, remedies under the IDEA, autism, and Pennsylvania's Chapter 14 regulations, including the Gaskin implementation. EDUC 481. Policy & Politics in Public Education: Analysis of the forces, factors, agencies, formal governmental systems and informal subsystems that influence educational policy in local districts and state and national governments.
EDUC 494. Field Work in (subtitle): Identification of significant problems in an educational environment, review of the literature, and development of appropriate research plans.
EDUC 495. Independent Study in (subtitle): Individual or small group study in the field of specialization.
