About Sigma Xi and the Lehigh chapter1 |
| Sigma Xi 2 was founded at Cornell University in 1886 and has grown to more than 70,000 members and 500 chapters worldwide. An excellent history of the society can be found at http://www.uc.edu/sigmaxi/about.html, based on an article by Michael A. Sokal, in the September-October 1986 issue of American Scientist. |
|
The Lehigh Chapter was formed in the 1920s as the 48th local chapter (chapter 49 was formed at U. Maryland in 1927, see http://www.atmos.umd.edu/~sigmaxi/homepage.html). The Lehigh chapter currently has more than 200 active members and it serves as home for Sigma Xi members in many academic, industrial, and medical institutions of the Lehigh Valley. Our web site (http://www.lehigh.edu/~insigxi) provides regional and national resources for researchers and the public. |

We hope to reconstruct some of the history of the Lehigh chapter that was stored by former chapter secretary Dr. Wesley Smith. (Currently in the storage closet off the reading room in Lewis Lab, as reported by Beall Fowler, 30 April 2008) Until we analyze these paper archives and post the information here, we have created a self-archiving system for our web pages. Chapter member lists, officers, and activities have been documented in directories that have been created each year on our web site since 2000 (see the link below). |
