Office of Student Leadership Development

Phase 4 - Engaged Leaders

Engaged Leaders

Objective:

Students will continually hone their skills by facilitating leadership development in other students, working in one-on-one situations with professional mentors on leadership issues and preparing to utilize their skills in diverse work environments. Students will also focus primarily on implementing the community change project developed in Phase 3.

This phase consists of students who have experienced leadership in a variety of forms and from a diversity of perspectives. These individuals have an in-depth understanding of themselves, their relationships, and their place in the world around them. As a result, they are intensely committed to leading change, serving and empowering others, transforming communities, and to building strong leadership skills in others.

Activities & Events:

Welcome Back Activity: The entire group of Engaged leaders will reconvene to catch up from summer, discuss fall semester activities, and revisit the premise surrounding their community change project as well as the summer progress on their research.

Teambuilding Retreat: All Leadership Lehigh participants will be taking part in an overnight retreat in early September. During this retreat, Engaged Leaders will begin strategic action planning for implementation of their community change project and select topics for further leadership development they would like to participate in throughout the year.

Community Service: Each team member will be responsible for completing seven hours of community service each semester through the Community Service Office. Eight service events have been planned by Leadership Lehigh members and each Experienced Leader will have the opportunity to participate in these events as well as any other form of service they find rewarding.

Leadership Learning Sessions: All Engaged Leaders will meet weekly to participate in various leadership training and development experiences on topics selected by the cohort at the fall retreat. These experiences often focus on areas such as, but not limited to: dealing with difficult people, supervision and critical conversations, negotiating the first career move, business etiquette in the world community, etc. The primary focus of these meetings is dedicated to constructing the necessary steps to implement the selected community change project. This can involve presentation of research, survey creation & design, program proposal writing, mock proposal presenting, as well as a variety of other items depending on the nature of the project selected.

The Leadership Portfolio: Each participant will keep a Leadership Portfolio. This will be built over the course of their time in the program and will serve as a reflective activity for students. A variety of pieces will comprise the leadership portfolio (i.e. articles, thoughts, quotes, or resources; writing about specific leadership moments they experience; lists of discussion topics, etc.)

Optional Activities:

Phase II Team Leader Program: Phase IV students have the opportunity to apply to serve as Phase II Team Leaders for the academic year. As a part of this experience, they are able to facilitate small group meetings and serve as an advisor to their group on team dynamics, project management and university policy as they implement a community service project within the Lehigh community. They also serve as resources and informal mentors to the Phase II students.

End of Semester and Year Events: These social events at the end of each semester will be planned to serve as an opportunity for all Leadership Lehigh participants to celebrate their accomplishments and be recognized for their outstanding commitment to their own leadership development.

Other Activities: A variety of other leadership opportunities and activities will be offered by the Office of Student Leadership Development and other offices each year. These events are also offered to Leadership Lehigh participants.
