Objective: To provide students with the opportunity to further explore theoretical concepts associated with leadership development and to continue to develop their own definitions of and beliefs about leadership.
Established leaders are students who are starting to visualize the world in new and different ways and are interested in exploring the many different forms that leadership takes within the larger global community. These students spend a significant amount of time on campus and in the community immersed in leadership experiences that allow them to practice the skills they are learning.
Activities & Events:
Welcome Back Activity: The entire group of Established leaders will reconvene to catch up from summer, discuss fall semester activities, and to begin planning for their "Team Leadership" experience.
Teambuilding Retreat: All Leadership Lehigh participants will be taking part in a retreat in early September. During this retreat, Established Leaders will participate in a low ropes course experience. They will also present their "Team Leadership" proposals to the group.
Community Service: Each team member will be responsible for completing six hours of community service through the Community Service Office each semester. Eight service events have been planned by Leadership Lehigh members and each Established Leader will have the opportunity to participate in these events along with Phase I students.
Team Leadership Challenge: Two core concepts imbedded in the Phase II curriculum are "project management" and "working with groups and teams to accomplish tasks and create change." These concepts will be the focus of various workshops throughout the year; however, they will be heavily emphasized through a year-long, team project. Phase II participants will draft proposals for various campus and/or community based projects they would like to complete in teams throughout the academic year. Proposals will be voted on by all Phase II participants and individuals will be assigned to project teams based on their interest in various topics. Throughout the year, these teams will work together to set goals, develop plans, and see their project through to completion. Throughout their experience, each team will be advised by a Lehigh University administrator whose roles will be to serve as a resource and help the group reflect on the process of working as a team to accomplish a goal.
Ex. Bring the AIDS quilt to the Lehigh campus, Begin a new tutoring program in a local high school, Hold a Fashion Show to raise money for charity, etc.
Leadership Workshops: All Established Leaders will attend three leadership workshops each semester, along with one special event. Special events may include guest speakers, debates, fieldtrips, campus events, etc. Workshops for Established Leaders focus on topics such as project management, fundraising and budgeting, group and team dynamics, conflict management, and group decision-making.
The Leadership Portfolio: Each participant will keep a Leadership Portfolio. This will be built over the course of their time in the program and will serve as a reflective activity for students. A variety of pieces will comprise the leadership portfolio (i.e. articles, thoughts, quotes, or resources; writing about specific leadership moments they experience; lists of discussion topics, etc.)
Optional Activities:
End of Semester and Year Events: These social events at the end of each semester will be planned to serve as an opportunity for all Leadership Lehigh participants to celebrate their accomplishments and be recognized for their outstanding commitment to their own leadership development.
Other Activities: A variety of other leadership opportunities and activities will be offered by the Office of Student Leadership Development and other offices each year. These events are also offered to Leadership Lehigh participants.
