Phase 1 - Emerging Leaders

Objective: To help first year students obtain the basic skills necessary to be successful students at Lehigh; to help them begin to examine their own personal values, styles, and self-concept in regards to their personal development. This phase of the program will also provide new students the opportunity to build a support network of faculty, staff, and peers who can facilitate their personal and professional growth while at Lehigh.

Activities & Events:
Opening Activity: Students will be introduced to the Leadership Lehigh program, the staff working directly with the program, and the other team members with whom they will be working.

Leadership Lehigh Retreat & Ropes Course Experience: The entire Emerging Leader team will spend a half-day completing a low-ropes initiative at a regionally located challenge course and retreat site.

Community Service: Each team member will be responsible for completing five hours of individual community service through the Community Service Office each semester. Additionally, the team will decide on and complete one group service project during the spring semester.

Leadership Workshops: All program participants will attend leadership workshops throughout the year. Workshop topics include Leadership Style Preferences, Goal Setting, Values Clarification, etc.

Team meetings: The Emerging Leaders group will be divided into smaller teams with whom they will meet regularly throughout the semester. During these meetings, students will further discuss and explore theoretical leadership concepts, as well as other intangible components of a solid leadership foundation. During this time, they will also be able to offer feedback, discuss future suggestions for program changes and enhancements. These meetings are scheduled at the convenience of the members of the group.

The Leadership Portfolio: Each participant will keep a Leadership Portfolio. This will be built over the course of their time in the program and will serve as a reflective activity for students. A variety of pieces will comprise the leadership portfolio (i.e. articles, thoughts, quotes, or resources; writing about specific leadership moments they experience; lists of discussion topics, etc.)

Optional Activities:
End of Semester and Year Events: These social events at the end of each semester will be planned to serve as an opportunity for all Leadership Lehigh participants to celebrate their accomplishments and be recognized for their outstanding commitment to their own leadership development.

Other Activities: A variety of other leadership opportunities and activities will be offered by the Office of Student Leadership Development and other departments each year. These events are also offered to Leadership Lehigh participants.
