Sherman Fairchild Center for Solid State
Studies |
The Sherman Fairchild Laboratory for
Solid-State Studies in located on the lower campus of Lehigh Univerisity
. The Center provides offices and laboratories for an interdisciplinary
staff
from the departments of
physics, materials
science and engineering , and electrical engineering
. The building was opened in the fall of 1976. An anannex completed in
1988 connects it with Lewis Laboratory (the physics building). It is
named in honor
of Sherman Fairchild, founder of the Fairchild Camera and Instrument
Corporation
and Fairchild Industries.
Each semester the center sponsors
a lecture series.
Speakers come from industry or other schools and talks are open to the
public.
Refreshments allow for informal discussions before talks start.
In addition to the
graduate work, selected undergraduates can work at the lab over the
summer. A limited number of Sherman Fairchild Scholars are chosen from
many different schools to participate in this program.
