The Pueblo Nuevo Project
Pueblo Nuevo, Honduras suffers from both water quantity and water quality issues. The current water distribution system does not allow the residents of Pueblo Nuevo to receive all the water they water they need during times of peak demand. When there is enough water, the water is contaminated with E. Coli and fecal bacteria which plagues the residents with sickness on a regular basis.
What We Have Done
LU-EWB designed a 20,000 gallon water sto-rage tank for the town of Pueblo Nuevo to help combat the water quantity problem. The tank is located at the top of a high hill. The construction of the water tank began in August of 2008 and will be completed by October of 2008. A hypochlorinator will be installed to treat the water. Water will then be pumped from the spring to the tank where it will be gravity fed to all the homes in the town. The town's distribution system will be improved to ensure that each home receives an adequate amount of water.
Project Status
Follow up trips will be necessary to implement the improvements to the distribution as well as to install the hypochlorinator. Once the the hypochlorinator has been installed, the water will be tested to determine the need for further treatment. LU-EWB will continue to follow up with Pueblo Nuevo to ensure that the new water system is working properly and the water will be tested periodically to guarantee that it is safe.
